Born with a crayon in his cradle, Bas Kennedy has always enjoyed drawing and painting. Encouraged to pursue his obvious artistic abilities from an early age, his career took off as a trainee window dresser with a leading Melbourne department store before, in a strange turn of events, Bas joined the Australian cast of My Fair Lady as a professional dancer.
After touring Australia and New Zealand for two and a half years, it was off to London, The Windmill Theatre, Sadler’s Wells Company and subsequently America, writing original songs and lyrics.
Never without a sketch book far from hand, Bas eventually returned to his native Australia, where he met his partner Nan and, together, launched a successful fashion business that still flourishes.
Today, many of those rich life experiences are reflected in Bas’s vibrant and varied paintings: ballet, theatre, bars, night clubs, human interaction at its most colourful.
Now settled in Dartmouth, England, Bas and Nan are close enough to their son Andreas and grandson Louis in London, as well as the Devon coast and countryside which they’ve come to love – and now call home.
Bas's work is frequently exhibited at The Seahorse Restaurant in Dartmouth – www.seahorserestaurant.co.uk
